Was recommended to check this place out by a coworker and will never go back. The place is disgusting and there is no hostess to even give you a place to sit. I got a burrito, which I figured you couldn't screw up, and after swatting away the flies tried a few bites before I was lucky enough see hair before consuming it. It was not only on top but baked in to where it wouldn't even come out after pulling about a foot of it away. I was absolutely disgusted and didn't get an apology from the sub par server or management. My meal was free but I didn't touch the replacement food and wanted to get out asap and I did. I would have rather had Taco Bell than this place and that is no joke. At least I know there is at least some cleanliness and regulations there.

We haven't been to this place in a few years (it was pretty bad back then) so last night we decided to give it another try to see if anything had changed. The prices had gone up and the food was the still same (mediocre). I had their Chicken Loco and it was most definitely frozen, not fresh. Service was extremely slow and it took the better part of 20 minutes for our food just to get to the table (We arrived early so it wasn't that busy). Our server left the check well before we finished (which always fires me up) and said "no rush". But that's exactly how we felt -- rushed. After waiting 15 minutes for our server to return to process our bill (the same one who was in such a hurry to give us the check before we finished), we decided to leave cash and get out of there. If you want authentic, delicious food and fast, friendly service -- go down 28th street for a mile or so to El Arriero. They're one of the best in the area for Mexican cuisine and and their prices are almost identical to this place.

Portion size is less each visit. Fajitas Combo for 1 ($15) had barely enough meat for 3 smaller fajitas! $1.50 charge for additional chips when your first basket is 1/2 full is not normal. Bean dip is great & service was good. Two meals & pop + extra chip charge came to $34 before tip. Due to small portions and additional charges-I wont return.

The nachos are good but the tortilla chips are mass produced, as are the taco shells. The $3 happy hour nachos are a great value. But it's not authentic mexican. It's more like bar food mexican. Service was ok. I was not impressed enough to return.

It's a dive, but they have pretty good food and decent service. It's good for a quarterly visit!

You can bet your bean dip I like this old dive like Mexican bar restaurant. I go here all the time... Is it the best Mexican food I have ever had. Nope... But the service is solid and the prices are great and you will not leave hungry or sober if you partake in a few of their big assed Margarita's... The main floor has a bar and tons of seating... Lot's of little Mexican inspired things all over the walls and pretty much everywhere you look. The basement is like a dungeon and it's dark, divey, and full of character. I dig this little bar. Again the prices are great so drink up and fill up on their famous bean dip and salsa... The restrooms are clean and pretty well lit and lets be honest you are drinking and eating in a Mexican restaurant so this is a pretty big plus. Cheers, or should I say Salud!

This is our family's favorite restaurant. We eat there a couple times a month. They're always friendly and the fajitas smell great. My son likes all the decorations and the Teevees. There's a friendly crowd, and the wait staff and hosts are great.

We think that this is the best Mexican restaurant in GR. Having dined here for well over 30 years, we have never had a bad experience. I took my wife here on our first date in 1981 and we continue to dine here frequently. The Mexican pizza and wet buritto ranchero style are our favorites. It's always at the top of our list.

Oye! Just left the Cantina and WOW, what a nice time. We had a nice time. A REALLY nice time. I've been a fan of the Cantina for a long long time, as it is practically in my backyard, has an incredible and timeless decor, and the food has kept people coming back for years and years. If coming for lunch, come early... and if coming for dinner, come early. This spot has been a busy full service, full bar, Mexican delight for many many years. Still operated by the same family that opened it, La Cantina has a large menu of authentic fare as well as some more Americanized Mexican stuff as well. Every meal (or round of drinks) is served with complimentary in-house made chips, salsa, and the optional beans... oh the beans! The service is friendly, fast, and anticipates needs like refills on great margaritas, salsa, and chipy chips. Today, we were served by Erin the barkeep, and she was quick to suggest items, and gave us recommendations that were going to save us a buck or two... which oh yeah, was compensated by the extra tippage. The Cantina even has a drive-thru window which is fast and efficient for those who are in the mood for something not only healthier than the local Taco Bell, but WAY BETTER. Thanks Erin for a great time today... we came in for a round of shots, but stayed for much more. You're top notch!

Cantina is great. A buddy of mine and I came here on a weekend to eat a late lunch/early dinner, so the downstairs bar wasn't open, but we dined in the main restaurant area. It was during happy hour, so there was a good amount of people there (namely, teachers). But other than that, the food was subpar. I got a wet burritos, and the prices weren't off the charts, but they seemed to charge a bit too much extra for sour cream and guacamole. They even charge you for an extra chip refill while you wait for your food. Their salsa is a bit watered down and their "World Famous Bean Dip" is basically refried beans that are seasoned with some salt or something like that. Nothing special. Portions are gigantic, but growing up in California, this was not authentic Mexican food. You're better off on Division getting carne asada tacos. This is by far the most whitewashed Mexican food on the face of this planet. Even Taco Bell seems to be more authentic than this stuff. Only good part about this was $3 PBR pitchers, which helped the food go down really well. Don't know if I'll be back to the restaurant again. Hopefully I'll come back for a bar night.

Place has a lot of history and has been a GR staple for many years. I think you have to know what to expect and how this place rolls to truly appreciate it. If you have a bad first experience, they are worth another shot. I've had good and bad times but I've been going here my whole life. People that know this place know it for the never ending bean dip, the lively downstairs (at times), nice upper and lower bar areas and all the good GR Mexican food with reasonable prices. Recently they re-did much of the inside including the booths and walls, which was needed. I hear the margaritas are delish and they have a good piss-beer selection, all adding to the quaint 'dirty Mexican' atmosphere you want. Recently I've been getting the wings, yes wings! They are really good and contain a huge amounts of meat. The wings are tangy and fire grilled to perfection. Yes, they have great burritos, enchiladas and all the traditional Mexican fare. Did I mention the never ending bean dip? I hear it was first made when they opened and it just keeps self-rejuvenating itself. So good! Thank you La' Cantina for being there in all my times of Mexican food need.

GROSS GROSS!!!!!! Do not waist your time or money.. Everything we had came out of a can and was microwaved. the waitress never came over except to drop off food or givve us our 30.00 check. the food was just down right nasty. You can get better rasting "mexican" food from Taco Bell.

Cantina was a nice departure from the faux-mex sort of restaurants in the main areas in SE Grand Rapids. Our server was very accommodating and the cooks were willing to be flexible to make more vegetarian options which were all very good. The quality is quite good and the style is very similar to authentic mexican with a touch of US of A influence. I would definitely go again especially for some good mexi-veggie action.

Same ol good tex-mex that has not changed since I was ten. The bar downstairs is starting to sag but still the same fun dungeon that used to sell bud 40's on tues nights. The new menu items are good and bring the can into a new era of mex cantinas. Try the wings!! Not sure what genius hit the jackpot with the recipe but whoever it is should lock it away!! Great wings to go with old school tex mex.

Yummy Margaritas and lunch menu had more than enough food. The meat sauce enchilada and beef burro, very good. The self serve bean dip is great with their chips and salsa table service.

great food; friendly service; they lost our order ticket so our food took some time to come out. an apology from the manager was automatic and she credited our order by 50% without us asking mistakes happen, how a place handles it is what matters to me. they did a great job!!! it also helps that the food was outstanding. the ultimate burrito wiith chicken and steak is a 10 out of 10. it seems they grill the steak chicken and onion before wrapping it up. explosively good flavor!!!!! we will be back and enjoyed the meal the following day because portions are generously given

It's okay. Pretty old. Standard Americanized Mexican food. They do have a pot of hot bean dip you can help yourself to. Just nothing exceptional. service was pretty good.

If your on the East side of town and want Mexican this is a good choice. They are famous for their bean dip which is no charge with your basket of chips. (Extra baskets of chips are $1.50 and the bean dip is so good you often end up getting a 2nd basket) But you don't go to a restaurant for the bean dip. I love their Wet Burrito Magnifico with MEAT SAUCE. Basically a brown beef based sauce that includes more taco meat in the sauce. I get it almost every time. I also love their Chimichungas usually opting for shredded chicken. Fajitas are good too. My wife just gets a combo with tacos and enchiladas and likes it. I doubt you can go wrong here and minus alcohol it is hard to spend $25 for a couple to eat here. I can't guess what your bar bill will be especially when you see their "Build your own Margarita" :)
(4)
James S.
Many of the reviews on here for this restaurant are very poor representations of how AMAZING this restaurant actually is. A Mexican pizza that will stuff 2 people for $8.75? A margarita for $6 with 4.8 ounces of alcohol? Really friendly and personable service with a great, newly renovated feel inside, as well as full service lounge and drive-thru? What else could you ask for? If $1.50 for a 2nd basket of chips is too high then consider that they give all the free bean dip, red and green salsa you can eat. Plus $1.50 taco bar Mondays downstairs. And last but not least their happy hour is HUGE AND LONG. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 2-6pm. (4 hours!) It includes $4 margaritas, $1 draft PBR, Bud Light and Miller Light and not to mention half orders of their nachos supreme for only $3! And Mexican pizzas for $6! Bottom line: this is not the nicest restaurant in Grand Rapids, but for the price and the epic portions and their (extremely) heavy pours on drinks and their great pitcher prices, you can't beat Cantina for cheap, great food and drinks at an unbeatable price.

If it weren't for the great margaritas this place would b a solid 1 star. Became extremely ill after having their steak fajitas and had to be hospitalized. Although I can't prove this place was to blame I'm most certain it was due to their grungy unsanitary ways. They don't call this place the can for nothing.

Really unhappy with my burrito, I had heard great things but the sauce tasted like it was out of a can. Great margarita, but not planning dinner there again

Went in a few months ago for some good drinks and appetizers. The queso was horrible and the margaritas had no Alcohol. I don't expect the drinks to be loaded, but I am sure we paid top dollar for a virgin margarita. We were planning on ordering more, but decided to leave. Won't be back.

3 stars is probably a little generous. A buck fifty for an extra basket of chips, really ? They forgot the rancheros sauce on my wife's chimichanga. How does that leave the kitchen? Decidedly average.

The Can is a landmark. The service at the bar is spot on. Great drink specials, low key environment, and free chips and salsa! I wish this place the best, and we will keep coming back for years to come!

Date night..the best skinny margaritas in town. Love the bean dip and the chips rock. Thank you!

I'm a nacho freak. I eat them everywhere I go, except bW3 with their fake cheese. These are in my top 3 in GR. Huge portions at the drive thru served in a pizza box for stability and easy clean up! Trying the wings next time too. The large is around $10 but there's enough for 2 people.

This place has been a standard of Mexican food in GR for many years. I think it's been owned by the same family for years. The food is always fresh and good. I love the "free" bean dip.

All around pretty good Mexican food. My co-worker and I both got the El Presidente burrito. I wanted to make a few changes to it and they were happy to do so. The spicy grilled shrimp on top of the burrito was a nice added benefit. The service was attentive, and the waitress was smiling and courteous.

I just had the Ultimate Wet Burrito from Cantina. The steak, cheese & tomato-based ranchero sauce are 10x better than you would have at a typical Mexican restaurant. Great atmosphere. A must-go if you're craving Mexican food!

Let's start by saying this back patio is my favorite place to sit in the summer time. The service always seems a bit slow to start around noon but not bad considering how many tables they have sit down at that time. The free chips and salsa and bean dip are an excellent appetizer while you wait for your food. I got the chimichanga for the first time and it had great flavor and amazing taste. The rice and beans do not look like the canned versions I see so much of at other restaurants, they are fluffy fresh and great taste. I can't wait for the snow to break so I can return here for lunch in the sunshine. Overall food is great, service is adequate and the atmosphere is authentic! Great spot on 28th st!

Great interior decor I got the tamales for lunch and they were delicious. My wife got a margarita which was so good she almost got 2. Free chips and salsa and "our famous bean dip" was an unsuspected bonus. Very reasonable prices and large portions. We left with a to go box.

I won't be going back to this Mexican restaurant off of 28th Street. We went there with a large group and had a waitress with an attitude. I asked for some extra chips and was informed that an extra serving cost a dollar 50 because the basket is only meant to serve four people. My burrito I ordered was mostly lettuce and there was hardly any chicken in it don't recommend going there

Went here last night for my birthday and it was a DISASTER. We had reservations but they gave our room to a different group and we were crammed into the upstairs party room. It took forever to get our drinks. I wasn't ID'd (which is not that big of a deal, after all, there's no way you could mistake me for under 21!) and when I made a joke of it, the server was very insulting about my age. We were told by the manager that we would receive a free drink for myself and my cousin (also celebrating her birthday) but when we asked, the server said there was nothing free for birthdays. She never came back to remove our dirty dishes, and we got no refills on our sodas or waters because the server was nowhere to be seen! When we got our bills, they were higher than expected due to an automatic gratuity. My sister chose not to pay that gratuity because the service was so horrible, and a manager ended up coming out and basically forced her to pay it. My husband asked the manager about our free birthday drinks that had been promised when we reserved, and he said we didn't get a drink but we did get dessert. My husband told him that we didn't get our desserts and the manager said "well, you have to ask for the free birthday perk. " I DID ASK and was told there was nothing. On top of all that, the restaurant was dirty and the food was not very good. This used to be a fantastic restaurant but has gone WAY downhill since the last time I was there about two years ago. Probably great for a small group but definitely AVOID if you're having a party.

Why am I wasting time writing a review of standard from a can American Mexican? Because at least the chips and salsa should taste good. Stale and cold? C'mon!

the food is taco bell on a plate, the standouts are the chips and been dip everything is soooo generic and disappointing. the staff is very friendly and the restaurant itself is very clean and nice since the recent remodel. there aren't any respectable mexican places within 2 miles of here. they do have a full bar hence the two stars.
(2)
Charlee G.
conducive for conversation. Other than good beer that's about all I've got. Food was bland at best. I had the nachos deluxe, some chips thrown on plate, some (not much) cheese on top with very few tomatoes and peppers. I can make better especially for over $7. Friend had chicken nachos and they did not look any better. My husband had enchiladas and was far from impressed. The mexican pizza that a friend had looked the best but not impressive. Go for the beer and a place to chat, forget eating.

I love the Can! It's not the most authentic, but it tastes amazing and it's the type of Mexican cuisine that I have grown to love. Their meat sauce is amazing. Try the fajita pita with a side of meat sauce and sour cream. Double dunk, it is amazing. The Mexican pizzas are quite delicious, don't be scared to try the seafood one! The Can also has the best wings in Grand Rapids, maybe even anywhere I've ever been (might I just reiterate that I love wings and have tried them everywhere). Check any snobby expectations at the door if you truly want to appreciate and experience a GR staple like the Can.

Great bean dip, great salsa, very reasonable prices with huge portions. This is my wife's favorite mexican place in town. I would highly recommend.

I don't think of Cantina as a "restaurant". I go for the basement bar for cheap fun with friends. The friends love the $3 pitchers of PBR, I splurge the extra buck for Miller Lite in my pitcher. I also usually drop a few dollars in the juke box for fun 80s/90s hip hop and 90s alternative music. I'm the one who played Everything Zen right between Shoop & Bel Biv DeVoe's Poison. The free chips and bean dip/salsa don't hurt either.
(4)
Jenny W.
I took an out of town coworker to Cantina yesterday for lunch. Since I've been in the Grand Rapids area I can't recall that the menu has changed, but there is still a really good selection of food available for lunch and at reasonable prices. It seems as if the chains are taking over on 28th Street and it's nice to have some options that aren't.

This is a cool and rather "authentic" Mexican style restaurant and the food, though no match for anything in the Southwes US or Los Angesles, etc, it does pretty well. I was surprised to find it as good as it is. I've been twice now and had a taco (start easy) and a fajita wrap (how could you mess that up?). They were both tasty. I don't recommend the 'soft tacos' because they use flour tortillas and I don't like that and the lettuce tastes like it's bagged stuff. As you are seated they give you a basket of chips and some salsa. Additionally they make a nice bean dip. All that is free but if you want more chips, it will cost you. I've NEVER had that happen in a Mexican restaurant so I was surprised. My husband had some kind of shredded pork something and found it too salty to eat and he likes salty food! The manager took it off the bill and I thought that showed some class. Last time I was there we were seated in the back which is a fun place with funky faux Mexican looking booths and so on. It's pretty fun and feels cozy. The combination plate I ordered was big and I couldn't eat it all. But what I had was tasty. Having said all that, I really do miss Southern California and the Mexican food there. This though, great for Grand Rapids, just doesn't come close. I had originally given this 4 stars but now I've been back a number of times and find it to be good for GR but mediocre in so many ways. I found the soft tacos to be a joke.
(2)
Brett B.
Whoops, anyways I give it 4 stars, first off because they serve free bean dip, which is equivalent to refried beans, and it's pretty good. The fajitas are really good, but the nachos aren't great. They are more like bar food nachos, not bad, but not what you expect. I'm still searching for a mexican place serving white cheese dip, because when I think of Mexican places that should be part of what I get, and it's just not there. So if you want amazing mexican, go to this place called monterreys in atlanta, otherwise start your own Mexican place, because this one is the best I've found, but it's not that great.

Best food ever! Great atmosphere with a unique interior. Guacamole was full of fresh tomato and delicious. Fajitas were amazing. Try the salt shaker with cheese salt.. adds an interesting yet enjoyable flavor. Prices are reasonable and the staff was very friendly.

I've been there quite a few times, about half to-go. I looove their chips n salsa. The rest of their food is hit or miss. I really like their chicken tacos though. I would say go downstairs, enjoy the cheap beer and margs and snack on some a la carte items. Dont expect some amazing food, but dont expect the worst! The bartenders are always helpful and nice!

This was one of my favorite restaurants since I was a young child. About 2 years ago they changed it from the quaint, "south of the border" type building to a modernized architecture, which lost points in my book. I went to eat there after they made their renovations, and the food was lacking something. Spice, seasoning, taste.... that's what it was. I still like the food well enough, but I don't think I could honestly still say that if they didn't have the same homemade bean dip recipe. I could sit there all day and eat that bean dip! Their margaritas are stellar, and I think all in all, now that I have grown up and so have my tastes, I prefer to unwind at Cantina with drinks and snacks rather than an entire meal. I love the atmosphere at this place, and thankfully the interior hasn't lost any of its character. I wish I could say that for the exterior....

Alicia Y.
The place looks really nice, but the food seemed to lack authenticity. The portions are very large (more than one can eat), but not really memorable. The meat was dry and the lemonade too sweat.

it is so hilarious to look up cantina which i always call "la cantina" for some reason and see the bad reviews! ha! i have NEVER been here before 10pm and i have never eaten the food. my friends and i who were all south side GR raised came here when we were all in town visiting from college! we loved cantina because we could talk loudly, eat FREE salsa AND bean dip and still get a pitcher of beer for around $10! several of us moved away to chicago and new york and other places and the memories of these cheap nights kept us coming back for a while. we haven't been so much in the last year or so--i think largely because in chicago and new york there are now smoking bans but last we were in cantina people were blowing lots of smoke on us. maybe that has changed though. how much do i miss watching folks play pool to bad country or bad pop-rap music and going to the bathroom with the wooden carved naked people on them--the special man parts drawn on because someone broke the real one off. ha! too bad i didn't go here on my last visit. it would have brought back lots of nice memories.

Very disappointed by the quality of food after receiving recommendations from friends. Not "authentic" Mexican, to be honest I'm not sure what they're going for but it's B-A-D.

Mediocre at best. If you know what good Mexican food is, don't waste your time here.
(2)

For Grand Rapids, this is about as good as it gets. Service was good, salsa was bland, the food was OK, and prices reasonable. My margarita needed more kick to it though. The layout is really strange, like everyone gets their own organic shaped area. It made it intimate in a way, but also very difficult to navigate the restaurant.

Becoming really hard these days to find a bad Mexican restaurant, and this one is no exception! Rice is awesome (normally rice is rice), huge menu which actually contains more interesting stuff than your run-of-the-mill mexican joint. Salsa is one of the best too.

Let's be realistic here for a minute. What was I expecting? Amazing Mexican food in Michigan? It can be done, I'm sure of it... but it's definitely not at Cantina Mexican Restaurant. I have dined here twice. The first time I went I had a flavored frozen margarita and it was fairly tasty. My food was average, and the wait time was normal. The second time I came by, it was a bit of a weird experience. I went to the bar to order some food to go, and waited exactly 15 minutes for a bartender to show up at the bar. Mind you, it was mid-day and there wasn't many people in the restaurant at all. My order did come out in a timely fashion, but when I went to pay, I requested some chips and salsa on the side... The bartender added it to my bill. I had no idea it was an extra $6 for the chips and salsa! She didn't warn me either, and then by the time she rang up my credit card, it was too late. Those chips and salsa were not even worth the $6. Average. Average at best. If you are looking for average (at best) Mexican food, this is a great place for you. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. Can the food be done better? Sure, it can be. But you won't find it here...well, at least I didn't find it there. Maybe you guys will have a different experience.

This was a decent find on a business trip to Grand Rapids. Tried the free bean dip and it was just warm refried beans - nothing overly special. The chicken chimi was great and came out hot & fast! I'd go here again but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

We went here yesterday because the restaurant we intended to go to was out of business. The bean dip is so yummy! I had been here many, many times as a kid and still love it. The servings were big and the service was good.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

(2)j n.
The nachos are good but the tortilla chips are mass produced, as are the taco shells. The $3 happy hour nachos are a great value. But it's not authentic mexican. It's more like bar food mexican. Service was ok. I was not impressed enough to return.
(3)Erin W.
It's a dive, but they have pretty good food and decent service. It's good for a quarterly visit!
(3)Sean M.

Best wings in GR. Love The Can !
(5)Harry C.
This is our family's favorite restaurant. We eat there a couple times a month. They're always friendly and the fajitas smell great. My son likes all the decorations and the Teevees. There's a friendly crowd, and the wait staff and hosts are great.
(4)John L.

(4)Sam A.

(4)Sandi S.
GROSS GROSS!!!!!! Do not waist your time or money.. Everything we had came out of a can and was microwaved. the waitress never came over except to drop off food or givve us our 30.00 check. the food was just down right nasty. You can get better rasting "mexican" food from Taco Bell.
(1)Arturo Z.
(4)Peter M.
(5)Stacey M.
Yummy Margaritas and lunch menu had more than enough food. The meat sauce enchilada and beef burro, very good. The self serve bean dip is great with their chips and salsa table service.
(4)Kyle S.
great food; friendly service; they lost our order ticket so our food took some time to come out. an apology from the manager was automatic and she credited our order by 50% without us asking mistakes happen, how a place handles it is what matters to me. they did a great job!!! it also helps that the food was outstanding. the ultimate burrito wiith chicken and steak is a 10 out of 10. it seems they grill the steak chicken and onion before wrapping it up. explosively good flavor!!!!! we will be back and enjoyed the meal the following day because portions are generously given
(4)Gretchen D.
It's okay. Pretty old. Standard Americanized Mexican food. They do have a pot of hot bean dip you can help yourself to. Just nothing exceptional. service was pretty good.
(2)Skip B.
(4)James S.
(5)Joey G.
If it weren't for the great margaritas this place would b a solid 1 star. Became extremely ill after having their steak fajitas and had to be hospitalized. Although I can't prove this place was to blame I'm most certain it was due to their grungy unsanitary ways. They don't call this place the can for nothing.
(2)Jana L.
Really unhappy with my burrito, I had heard great things but the sauce tasted like it was out of a can. Great margarita, but not planning dinner there again
(2)George S.
Went through the drve through between 1 AM and 2 AM. My burrito was warm, at best. The food should be hot. I'm open to trying again.
(1)Marie N.
(1)Brian W.
3 stars is probably a little generous. A buck fifty for an extra basket of chips, really ? They forgot the rancheros sauce on my wife's chimichanga. How does that leave the kitchen? Decidedly average.
(3)Max B.
The Can is a landmark. The service at the bar is spot on. Great drink specials, low key environment, and free chips and salsa! I wish this place the best, and we will keep coming back for years to come!
(5)Jimmy L.
Date night..the best skinny margaritas in town. Love the bean dip and the chips rock. Thank you!
(5)Mike B.
(5)Kori Y.
This place has been a standard of Mexican food in GR for many years. I think it's been owned by the same family for years. The food is always fresh and good. I love the "free" bean dip.
(4)Wayne G.
(4)John C.
I just had the Ultimate Wet Burrito from Cantina. The steak, cheese & tomato-based ranchero sauce are 10x better than you would have at a typical Mexican restaurant. Great atmosphere. A must-go if you're craving Mexican food!
(5)Jesse G.
(4)R M.
Great interior decor I got the tamales for lunch and they were delicious. My wife got a margarita which was so good she almost got 2. Free chips and salsa and "our famous bean dip" was an unsuspected bonus. Very reasonable prices and large portions. We left with a to go box.
(5)Bernadene F.
I won't be going back to this Mexican restaurant off of 28th Street. We went there with a large group and had a waitress with an attitude. I asked for some extra chips and was informed that an extra serving cost a dollar 50 because the basket is only meant to serve four people. My burrito I ordered was mostly lettuce and there was hardly any chicken in it don't recommend going there
(1)Rene C.
Working in the area and was ready to eat something small and go to sleep1/2 order Beef Supreme Nachos Meat had a distinct smell of old meat, no recommendations. Worst, coworker agrees.
(1)Rose S.

C'mon!
(1)El P.
the food is taco bell on a plate, the standouts are the chips and been dip everything is soooo generic and disappointing. the staff is very friendly and the restaurant itself is very clean and nice since the recent remodel. there aren't any respectable mexican places within 2 miles of here. they do have a full bar hence the two stars.
(2)Charlee G.
conducive for conversation.
(2)Julia G.
(5)Mr. M.
Great bean dip, great salsa, very reasonable prices with huge portions. This is my wife's favorite mexican place in town. I would highly recommend.
(5)Jen B.
(4)Jenny W.
(4)Myrna J.
(2)Brett B.
(4)Lynn M.
(5)Austin G.
Good service, good food. I had the Burrito Magnifico, and it was great.
(4)Ashleigh E.
(3)Jennifer W.
(3)Alicia Y.
The place looks really nice, but the food seemed to lack authenticity. The portions are very large (more than one can eat), but not really memorable. The meat was dry and the lemonade too sweat.
(2)Jen J.
it is so hilarious to look up cantina which i always call "la cantina" for some reason and see the bad reviews! ha! i have NEVER been here before 10pm and i have never eaten the food. my friends and i who were all south side GR raised came here when we were all in town visiting from college! we loved cantina because we could talk loudly, eat FREE salsa AND bean dip and still get a pitcher of beer for around $10! several of us moved away to chicago and new york and other places and the memories of these cheap nights kept us coming back for a while. we haven't been so much in the last year or so--i think largely because in chicago and new york there are now smoking bans but last we were in cantina people were blowing lots of smoke on us. maybe that has changed though. how much do i miss watching folks play pool to bad country or bad pop-rap music and going to the bathroom with the wooden carved naked people on them--the special man parts drawn on because someone broke the real one off. ha! too bad i didn't go here on my last visit. it would have brought back lots of nice memories.
(3)Matthew D.
Very disappointed by the quality of food after receiving recommendations from friends. Not "authentic" Mexican, to be honest I'm not sure what they're going for but it's B-A-D.
(1)M T.
Mediocre at best. If you know what good Mexican food is, don't waste your time here.
(2)Dea A.
(2)Chris S.
Cantina: even shittier than the Beltline Bar.
(1)J M.
Great food and friendly staff! Everything is fresh and made here. Tacos were great with the home-made guacamole. I'll definitely return!
(5)Steve D.
Becoming really hard these days to find a bad Mexican restaurant, and this one is no exception! Rice is awesome (normally rice is rice), huge menu which actually contains more interesting stuff than your run-of-the-mill mexican joint. Salsa is one of the best too.
(5)Jennifer R.
(2)Laurie B.
This was a decent find on a business trip to Grand Rapids. Tried the free bean dip and it was just warm refried beans - nothing overly special. The chicken chimi was great and came out hot & fast! I'd go here again but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.
(3)Kendra L.
We went here yesterday because the restaurant we intended to go to was out of business. The bean dip is so yummy! I had been here many, many times as a kid and still love it. The servings were big and the service was good.
